What the text counter measures

Character count includes every character in the text, while the no-spaces count removes whitespace. Words are counted from groups separated by whitespace. Lines are based on line breaks, and paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Estimated reading time uses a simple baseline of about 200 words per minute.

Sentence counting is intentionally lightweight: it counts text segments ending in a period, exclamation mark, or question mark. That makes it useful for a quick estimate, but abbreviations, unusual punctuation, languages with different sentence markers, or unfinished sentences can make the sentence total differ from a linguistic analysis.

Privacy and limitations

All counting is performed locally in your browser. Your draft does not need to be sent to Votilo. Counts are practical text-processing estimates rather than grammar analysis, and reading time varies by reader, language, formatting, and subject matter.

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces included in the character count?

The page shows both totals: all characters and characters with whitespace removed.

How are words counted?

Words are estimated from non-empty groups separated by whitespace.

How are sentences counted?

The counter looks for segments ending in a period, exclamation mark, or question mark, so the result is an estimate rather than full language parsing.

How is reading time calculated?

The estimate uses roughly 200 words per minute and rounds longer text up to the next minute.

Does Votilo store the text I enter?

No. Counting happens in the browser and does not require your text to be uploaded.
