Text ↔ Binary
Enter plain text to see each character as 8-bit binary, or paste binary digits to decode them back to text. Supports Unicode (emoji, CJK, etc.) and lets you choose space, newline, or no separator. Runs in your browser.
Convert text into groups of binary digits or decode supported 8-bit and 16-bit binary chunks back into text. You can separate encoded chunks with spaces, new lines, or no visible separator, and copy either side of the conversion.
How to convert text and binary
- Type or paste text into the text box.
- Choose the binary separator you want.
- Convert to binary, or paste binary chunks and convert back to text.
- Copy the text or binary result as needed.
What the converter actually represents
For characters within the basic multilingual plane, the encoder pads the code value to at least 8 binary digits. Characters above U+FFFF are represented as two UTF-16 surrogate code units, each written as a 16-bit binary chunk.
Decoding accepts whitespace-separated chunks that are exactly 8 or 16 bits long. Eight-bit values are converted directly with String.fromCharCode, so values above 127 behave like single 8-bit code units rather than UTF-8 byte sequences.
Privacy and limitations
Conversion runs locally in the browser. This is a code-unit representation tool, not a general binary file decoder or UTF-8 byte decoder. Decoding requires valid 8-bit or 16-bit chunks; malformed chunk lengths are rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Is this UTF-8 binary encoding?
Not in the general byte-stream sense. The tool works with JavaScript character/code-unit values.
What binary chunk sizes can be decoded?
Each whitespace-separated chunk must be exactly 8 or 16 bits.
Can I use new lines between binary values?
Yes. Whitespace is accepted between chunks when decoding.
What happens with emoji?
Characters above U+FFFF are encoded as two 16-bit UTF-16 surrogate code units.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The conversion stays in your browser.
